Our Mission Statement
Our Purpose is to receive, obtain and disburse money and other items of value so as to assist the Carson City Library with resources needed to meet the informational needs of all citizens.
Funding Libraries: Who Pays?
The Carson City Library receives financial support from several sources. Primary among these is funding made available by the Board of Supervisors from general tax revenues. In adddition, State appropriated funds are disbursed from time to time. The Library also avails itself of grant funds from public and private sources whenever possible.
For many years the Friends of Carson City Library, a support group, have provided supplemental funds through book sales and other fund-raising events. In addition to the Friends' revenue enhancing efforts, individuals, businesses and civic organizations contribute annual subscription costs for about half of the titles comprising the Periodical Collection. Without this continuing community support, the services offered by the Library would be significantly less diverse and comprehensive than those provided today.
Why Do We Need Your Help?
The Carson City Library, through its Board of Trustees, has the goal of constantly striving to maintain the finest resources possible to serve the citizens and businesses of Carson City.
Competition for city general funds makes reaching this goal difficult and it is imperative that innovative approaches to funding be implemented to maintain existing programs. Now more than ever we are challenged by rapidly increasing use of the Library, an information explosion and expensive technological changes.
The dilemma of increased demand, coupled with decreased resources, is a serious one. While more and more books and other materials become available the Library's budget buys less and less. At the same time, new technology, repair and replacement of existing equipment, and expansion of services to a growing population weigh heavily on traditional funding sources. This, of course, directly impacts the way information is made available to Library patrons.
